But…. study does not always lead to sight. The Bible speaks of us being blind. 2 Corinthians 4:4 says, “In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.”
And Matthew 11:25-27 refers to truths being hidden from the wise, but shown to children:
“At that time Jesus declared, ‘I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; 26 yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.’”
A.W. Pink writes in The Attributes of God pg. 7-8:
“A spiritual and saving knowledge of God is the greatest need of every human creature. The foundation of all true knowledge of God must be a clear mental apprehension (SEEING!) of His perfections as revealed in Holy Scripture. An unknown God can neither be trusted, served nor worshipped…Something more than a theoretical knowledge of God is needed by us. God is only truly known in the soul as we yield ourselves to Him, submit to His authority, and regulate all the details of our lives by His holy precepts and commandments.”
Matthew 16:17 states: And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.”
If we really know God, the Father, if we SEE Him for Who He really is, it is because Jesus has SHOWN Him to us!
If we really know Jesus, if we SEE Him for Who He really is, it is because God, the Father SHOWS Him to us!
Sam Storms puts it this way:
“When the Father finally makes sense to us, when we come to know him truly, to the degree that we grasp something of his nature and will and ways, it is because the Son has graciously stooped to reveal him to us. Our knowledge of God does not come naturally. Neither is it ultimately the product of meticulous research or study. It certainly isn’t because we deserve it. It’s a gift from his Son. He and he alone is the mediator of the knowledge of God to mankind…….It takes God to know God!
Our response? Humility! Gratitude! Praise!”
For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians 4:6
